3/365.

3/365.

Not as bad as I was thinking it was. What's with me getting into composite pictures? And, again, I did it using -EEEKKK- Paint. o_O

The one on the left was actually impromptu while the one on the right was what I was planning. They're both the same book, taken on different days. This is a day late!

So I was in Huntington Beach until about noon today!! Meeting Sarah Dessen. God, in case I haven't said this enough on here, Sarah Dessen is my HERO. And I MET her. So now I will tell the story.

That day (Day Three) was actually starting off really badly. ): I'm on that girl time of the month--is there possibly a more discreet way of saying it?? Either way, I guess you gotta be blunt about it. Oh, well. Girls know what I mean, but no guy has a clue. It's just terrible. So, I was emotionally high-strung, going crazy. I wore shorts--stupid me. And--even stupider--a sort-of tight-fitting shirt. Then, when we got to the hotel and I saw a mirror, I totally just broke down, of course, hating what I looked like.

So my mom, the amazing heroic woman that she is, took me to Target where I found the most AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS dress. It was twenty-five dollars and my mom agreed to buy it for me, but as we were heading toward the check-out line, I just started crying, whining that that was wayyyy too much money for my mom to spend for just no reason, because I was being such a brat for demanding a brand new outfit because I was stupid enough to wear one that wasn't flattering. I just felt like a complete idiot, and there my mom was, doing everything to make me feel better. And there I was, a weeping mess, clinging to my mother in the middle of a Target in Huntington Beach. Wow, what a complete moron. God, really, though. My mom is incredible.

Anyway, the night, after I got changed into my beautiful dress and redid my makeup, was AMAZING. So my mom and I are settled near the table where Sarah Dessen was going to be reading and I'm like, oh, crap. I have to pee. Like, five minutes before it was about to start. So I shove my things to my mom and run off to the restroom, which is only across the way. I open the door, and standing right in front of me is Sarah Dessen. The one and only, real live Sarah Dessen. THE Sarah Dessen. Standing face to face right in front of me, just us and some lady she's talking to. I stand there, frozen in shock. Then she starts to walk away.
"Miss Dessen?" I say. She turns around, smiling at me. She's looking at me and all I can think is, "No. This isn't actually her. This isn't actually happening."
But it is her, and it is happening.
Talk about a WHOA moment.
"Oh my gosh!" I start, of course, already just totally tripping over my HUGE tongue. Talk about Lela-speak. "You're my FAVORITE author," I tell her. I stick out my hand and she takes it. I'm SHAKING HANDS with SARAH DESSEN. Again, there's no way this is happening. "I'm here for your signing, and I can't believe I'm actually meeting you! You're my hero, really," I tell her. She totally smiles at me. I ask her for a hug. Gosh, this is my favorite part! I ask her for a hug, and she HUGS me. SARAH DESSEN gave me a HUG. Like, whoa whoa whoawhoaWHOA. I'm still trying to believe it.

Seriously, she is my HERO. It would be like any other person meeting... I don't know... GOD. Yes, God.
Or, like, Barack Obama (Oh, God, did I spell his name wrong???), or Britney Spears. Or the Queen or EDWARD CULLEN (<3). Or, I don't know. She's my idle, my hero, the most amazing person ever.

I'm SO honored to have met her.

3/365; dedicated to my mommy. I lovelovelove her so so much. She's amazing. <3

So, yes, this is my secret for the day. In my defense, I AM a writer and I kind of have to have that mentality.
Either that, or I'm just a hopeless romantic. Yeah, I'd go with that one.

I think... Of all the books I've read. Hmm. Wes and Owen are my favorite favorite. And human Norman, too, from Keeping The Moon. How could I NOT fall in love with them--especially Wes? God. I would marry him in a heartbeat if he was real.

And Owen. <3

362 to go.

Living thing

Living thing

Today I went to bizzaro Paris where nothing seemed very Parisian and everything seemed kind of like the worst. If the PIFA street fair was supposed to embody the spirit and vibeskies of Paris 1910, I no longer have dreams of Quantum-Leaping back to that time or place.

I am sure the zill suburban ladies who were earlier clogging up the joint are mommy-blogging so hard about how amazing everything was, but that’s because they have children and their outlook on life has been stunted (J/K, moms! Love you guys, girls, whatevs!) The event was just not for me. I instantly seize at the thought of carnies, crowds, animals underfoot, and envisioning my own death.

The highlights were as follows:

1. Nicole Atkins, who, a few years ago, was slated to be New Jersey’s Amy Winehouse, and while yeah right, she still was pretty great. And no one really knew who she was save for me and a flailing fan boy in the front row. So I had an entire arm’s length of space to jam out.

2. The living statue fountain woman. I am sure there’s a better way to describe her steez, but I haven’t the mental wherewithal to come up with it. However, the only thing creepier than a living statue is a man commenting on how he’d like to have sex with it. Good job, bro.

3. Flying trampoline acrobats! And, coincidentally, where I was almost trampled to death. That would have been poetic. Still kind of cool and one of my favorite pictures of the day. So mostly just a self-serving favorite.

4. Seeing a two-year-old kid in a Belle and Sebastian t-shirt. Actually that was kind of a lowlight. Step your game up, homeboy.

5. While walking home, I was behind a gaggle of sorority girls clad in full sorority regalia (Why do they do this?). You know the white girl voice people use when they’re making fun of white people? She was talking in that voice but not because she was making fun of white girls, but because that was her voice. And she said, “What’s the Philadelphia Senior Center?” Her friend explained to her that it’s a center. For seniors. You know, exercising, arts and crafts and such. White Girl Voice was astounded. But not nearly as astounded as I that someone couldn’t put the words “senior” and “center” together, come up with an idea of what those two things combined could mean, and remain silent.

6. Speaking of white women, I also overheard an older black gent telling his older black lady friend that he pretty much only dates “people who aren’t black.” Had to walk away pretty quickly from that one.

7. Two college girls having a really self-congratulatory conversation about vegetarianism that was so basic and dumb it did not warrant such a serious-sounding tone. I believe the only thing they both said was, “You know, I just really don’t like meat.” So good.

And then my camera batteries died. I reached into my bag to fetch my recently purchased back-up batts only to realize they were not in there. I bought them at CVS moments before embarking on my Parisian adventures. Which just made me mad and wonder if someone pick-pocketed me for batteries. Worst thief ever. You might have taken my ultra lithiums, but you failed to snatch my monthly SEPTA transpass, a bottle of Smart Water, or my cache of acid reflux medicine? I believe the French call this Vous at-il tort.

10 Things About Me

10 Things About Me

10 Things about me...

I was tagged by Serena to do this. I'm not just spouting random things about myself willy nilly.

1. Lola is my homegirl.
I have a husband, two sons and my dog Harry. So Lola is the only girl for me to share things with. A bit sad really, because I am quite the girly girl.

2. I make cute babies, but I really suck at getting them out.
True. I've had two emergency c-sections. A four day induction, followed by a spot of hemorrhaging for the first. And a uterine rupture with the second. So our family is done.

3. I'm a science nerd.
I am really. I love biology the most. I have a degree in Applied Science (Animal Studies - Wildlife Biology). I've worked as a vet nurse and in Animal Ethics. Maybe one day I'll use my brain again.

4. I have creative bones.
I paint, I sew, I take photos, I sing in a band. Ok, that last one was a lie. I wish I did sing in a band. I wish I could sing, actually.

5. I have my own business.
It sounds really cool and stuff, but it's actually really, really tiny. Definitely not enough to pay the bills, but it does give me pocket money and keeps me from going mad at home with the two kids. I make dog collars and kids clothes. I sell online and do a lovely little boutique market every month.

6. I'm a 1950s housewife in disguise.
I am! I'm a stay at home mum. I like dresses and aprons. I love baking. I sew my kids clothes. That's about where it ends though. My husband would probably like it if I met him at the door of an afternoon in a cute dress and heels, but it's more like thread-covered jeans, grubby t-shirt and a crying child. 'Here, take the baby before I throw him out the window'.

7. I was petrified of driving.
So much so, that I waited until I was 26 years old and 35 weeks pregnant with my first son before I got my license. I'm alright these days, but whenever I have to drive somewhere new I have a little internal freak out and make sure I draw myself a little map.

8. I'm obsessed with tea and coffee.
I have to make myself a proper coffee first thing every morning. Otherwise I can't function. The beans must be the ones from the Noosa Farmer's Market and must be freshly ground by me. Then I'm good to go. Periodically through the day, I will have normal tea and a couple of pots of green tea. The green tea has to be China Jasmine from T2. No sugar in anything.

9. Distance makes the heart grow fonder.
It's true. My husband and I spent the first year of our relationship three hours away from each other. I was away at uni, he was working on the coast. He'd make the trek out to see me every few weeks or so, but we talked on the phone. A lot.

10. I will be an embarrassing mother.
I'm sure of it. I turn the music up in the car and sing along. Actually, the first song my son learnt was 'Sink In To Me' by Taking Back Sunday. It's ok though, he knows 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' now - like a proper child. I listen to the same bands I did as a teenager. I love red and black. Red hair, black clothes, red tattoos, black fingernails... I will be the weird mum, I know it. Lucky the boys are still too young to realise.

I tagged some people that I want to see do this too :P

RASTERIZED angelina-jolie-tattoo copy

RASTERIZED angelina-jolie-tattoo copy

My intention for this project was to create a feminine t-shirt (see Angelina t-shirt photo). Angelina Jolie's portrait was specifically chosen because of the intricate detail of her tattoos, hair and curves of her body. I also saw this portrait as a challenge because her face is submerged in a shadow; some may not be able to distinguish who she is.

The text used was those that matched her personality, so very strong text as well as soft and feminine. The texts on her jeans are of the main movies she has been in (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, Tomb Raider, Kung Fu Panda, Beowolf, Gone in 60 Seconds, Girl Interrupted). Text on her body and the outlining her body are of Angelina's characteristics and personality such as positive, lively, idealistic, active, family, diverse change. The text on Angelina's hair represents and conveys her mystic appeal of this portrait along with the many shadows.

I am using mostly clipping masks, the pen tool to write on a path, overlapping of words and many layers for this project. Clipping masks were used for shadows and pockets. The pen tool was used for her hair, outlines and her tattoos.

The text can give viewers a better understanding of Angelina Jolie in that her tattoos are in a foreign language, showing that Angelina is a world traveler. A huge part of Angelina is that she is very idealistic and tries to help those in other countries and in need, hence her adopted children. Her pants represents the famous movies she has been in and the text of her body represents who she is, her characteristic, personality, appeal.

My goal was to make the portrait more detailed and realistic because her body was very light, something less detailed would not have been as clear as to whom she was. Without the main marks of Angelina such as her tattoos, she may not have been recognized since her face is almost hidden amongst shadows.

If I could have had more time for this project I would have definitely spent more time on her hair and exaggerating it to make it look more full and detailed. Also, I would have added more detail onto her band onto her arm and on the tattoos on her back, as well as detailing on her jeans.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Q&A

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Q&A

From Right to Left:
Edgar Wright, Michael Cera, Anna Kendrick, and Jason Schwartzman

I went to the "Meet the Filmmaker" at the Apple Store in Soho for the new movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and got to ask Michael Cera and Edgar Wright some questions. It was such a cool experience and I got this awesome shot of all four of them taking to the individual interviewing them. I even got a free T-shirt, pin and Michael Cera's autograph. Overall it was a great experience!

The focus of this photograph was meant to be Michael Cera.
